The director of the University of Rhode Island's Tick Encounter Research Center Tom Mather blames the high counts on the cool and humid weather this spring. With tight school budgets and an emphasis on testing, there’s not always enough time to get outside and explore. But many groups across Rhode Island often take kids outdoors to poke around in nature. Rhode Island Public Radio’s environmental reporter Ambar Espinoza gives us a glimpse of some of the learning that happened outside this past school year.

Tue, 24 Jun 2014 09:30:00 +0000 Ambar Espinoza 35649 at http://ripr.org Kids Learn Science In Rhode Island's Outdoor Classrooms Rhode Island Receives $7.5 Million For Sandy Cleanup http://ripr.org/post/rhode-island-receives-75-million-sandy-cleanup
Rhode Island is receiving more federal funding to continue cleanup efforts started after Superstorm Sandy. So the DEM counts female turkeys and young turkeys to get a sense of population growth. And this is where the public comes in. The DEM is asking residents to report sightings of turkey hens and young turkeys.

The wild turkey population is estimated at about 3,500, a number that’s grown in the past two years.
Fri, 13 Jun 2014 19:58:34 +0000 Catherine Welch 35151 at http://ripr.org RI Needs Your Help Counting Wild Turkeys Renewable Energy Projects Approved In The General Assembly http://ripr.org/post/renewable-energy-projects-approved-general-assembly
The General Assembly voted to pass bills that extend and expand a program designed to stimulate renewable energy projects in the Ocean State.
