PROVIDENCE, RI – Blue Cross will reimburse Landmark for patients seen there through the end of the year or until a deal is reached with the hospital's potential buyer, Steward Health Care. The financially troubled hospital had sued the insurer and stopped paying it for its own employees' health care coverage. The claim: that Blue Cross had underpaid it for years. But the agreement just reached ends that lawsuit and potentially paves the way for the hospital's acquisition to happen sooner.
Landmark has also agreed to pay Blue Cross back for its employees' health coverage.
The agreement still needs to be approved by a Superior Court judge, but it would end a months-long public spat and streamline health care reimbursements for Landmark's patients. That approval could come as soon as this Wednesday, September 12.
