Boston Marathon Victim Throws Out First Pitch
A Rhode Islander injured in the Boston Marathon bombings threw out the first pitch at Saturday’s Red Sox game. Heather Abbott of Newport walked to the pitcher’s mound to a standing ovation. She had crutches under both arms. Her left leg stopped at the knee.
The Fenway crowd continued their cheers as she threw the pitch. Red Sox players also met with her before the game.
Abbott had last gone to Boston to watch the Sox play on Patriots' Day. She went down to the watch the marathon after the game. And she was waiting in line to get into a crowded restaurant on Boylston Street when the bombs went off. Doctors amputated her left leg below the knee.
A fundraiser has already helped raise more than $50,000 to help Abbott pay medical bills.
