Candidate for governor wants tax cut for veterans, seniors

Providence, R.I. – Despite the state's deep fiscal crisis, a Republican candidate for governor says military veterans and senior citizens deserve a tax break. John Robitaille, who is himself a former army captain, told a group of veterans last week that the state doesn't do enough to help veterans and senior citizens.

"I'm really appalled that military veterans and senior citizens are the most underserved population that we have in the state compared to many other populations that get treatment, that get help, that get welfare, that get assistance," he said.

Robitaille proposed exempting veterans' pensions and the pensions of anyone over 65 from state income taxes. He also promised to appoint a Director of Veterans' Affairs to oversee the administration of veteran's programs around the state.
