With CD1 a dead heat, top RI Dems to rally around Cicilline at press event

Rhode Island’s most prominent Democrats, including both of its US senators and the very popular Angel Taveras and Gina Raimondo, are set today to offer some belated support to Congressman David Cicilline as he finds himself in a dead heat with Republican challenger Brendan Doherty.

Via news release:

Congressman David Cicilline and Rhode Island Democrats will gather tomorrow at Slater Mill in Pawtucket to discuss Democratic priorities at a 1 p.m. news conference.

UPDATE: Doherty has slated his own newser for noon:

Brendan Doherty is calling a noon news conference today prior to the Democrat’s “Priorities” and “Unity” news conference.  Doherty will say this is nothing more than an 11th hour Cicilline rescue effort by state Democrats to save his failing campaign, a campaign marred by revelations of waste, corruption, hypocrisy and an ultimate lack of trust.  This is a veiled attempt to “re-package” a damaged congressman.  Doherty will detail Cicilline’s missed priorities and questions he still needs to answer before election day, next Tuesday.

Doherty is holding the news conference at the packaging business where he first launched his First District Congressional campaign 17 months ago.

Meanwhile, Doherty, the former superintendent of the RI State Police, has announced he has the backing of the RI state lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police.
