Doherty and Cicilline trade punches on DNC’s costly Newport fundraiser
Brendan Doherty’s GOP congressional campaign says a high-priced Newport fundraiser for Congressman David Cicilline this weekend — highlighted in Politico — doesn’t pass the laugh test because of Cicilline’s messaging about fighting for the middle class.
“Congressman Cicilline engages in divisive class warfare where he tries to paint himself as someone who will stand up to the wealthy on behalf of the middle class,” said Doherty Campaign Manager Ian Prior. “Meanwhile, he has a weekend retreat in Newport where on Friday his guests will attend a private reception, on Saturday they will dine with the Congressman at an undisclosed location, described only as an historic Newport home, and on Sunday they will be treated to a harbor cruise, all for the price of $2,500.”
Cicilline’s campaign manager, Eric Hyers, calls the criticism a sideshow from how Doherty would line up behind GOP House Speaker John Boehner.
“This is what they do. They distract, distract, distract. They stand with Boehner and then attack on everything other than what Brendan would do in Congress.”
Hyers says staging high-priced fundraisers doesn’t hurt Cicilline’s ability to identify with struggling Rhode Islanders.
