Occupy Providence: this is a non-violent movement
By CATHERINE WELCH
PROVIDENCE, RI – Organizers behind the Occupy Providence group have sent the people of Rhode Island a letter outlining the reasons why it will be setting up camp in downtown Providence.
The group plans on gathering 5:00pm on Saturday at Burnside Park and will remain there, they say for as long as it takes to, "build a society by, for and of the people."
Organizers call the occupation an act of free speech, that it will be non-violent and that whenever they do leave Burnside Park, they will leave it in better shape than they found it.
Providence Police Commissioner Steven Pare says police will not interfere with Occupy Providence as long as they don't create a traffic or public safety concern. Occupy Providence is part of a larger movement protesting economic inequality and corporate greed.
