Opposing 38 Studios from R.I. Left and Right
A variety of speakers from across the Rhode Island political spectrum will hold a Statehouse rally this afternoon to urge the General Assembly to oppose paying off the 38 Studios bonds.
Among those speaking are Larry Girouard of the R.I. Taxpayers group, spokes people from the R.I. Libertarian Party, the R.I. Green Party and Occupy Providence, the local offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
According to a statement from Occupy Providence, Rep. Karen MacBeth, a Democrat, and Rep. Michael Chippendale, a Republican will also speak against making the payments. The news release also stated that ``two major party candidates for governor will speak’’ but did not name them. So far, the only major candidates for governor to oppose the payments are the two Republicans vying for the GOP nomination – Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Barrington businessman Ken Block.
Also listed as a speaker is Gary Sasse, former executive director of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council. Sasse , who is now affiliated with the Hassenfeld Institute at Bryant University, was also director of administration for former Gov. Donald Carcieri, the architect of the doomed 38 Studios deal. (Sasse had left the Carcieri Administration by the time 38 Studios agreement was forged). RIPEC, a business financed government research group, is currently in favor of making the payments, as are Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Gen. Treas. Gina Raimondo, the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and the three Democratic candidates running for the party’s nomination for governor – Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Clay Pell.
The rally is slated for 4:30 at the Smith Street entrance to the capitol.
