Osram Sylvania Plant To Close In Central Falls

Lighting manufacturer Osram Sylvania has announced it will close its plant in Central Falls. The company said the closing is due to changes in the light bulb industry.

Osram Sylvania said it needs to close the Central Falls plant so it can focus on its move from traditional lighting to solid-state lighting, such as LED light bulbs.

Eighty-eight workers in Central Falls will lose their jobs when the plant closes in September. The news has an emotional edge for Central Falls Mayor James Diosa whose father worked at the plant for 30 years. “He was able to buy his home and raise us through his work at Osram,” said Diossa.

Diosa said the Osram Sylvania plant was one of the city’s top three property taxpayers. He said he’s working with the governor and congressional delegation to see if there’s a way to keep the plant open in Central Falls.

The lighting manufacturer is also closing plants in Manchester, NH and York, PA.
