Postal worker charged with taking money from cards
PROVIDENCE, RI – A postal worker from Cranston has been charged with stealing money from greeting cards sent through the mail. Robert Hart faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
The investigation began two-and-a-half weeks ago when a postal service inspector found more than one hundred pieces of mail that had been rifled through at the Providence Processing and Distribution Center.
According to court documents, the mail had been slit open cleanly along the top seam. Cash had been removed from some of them. A sting operation was set up. Agents planted marked $20 bills in greeting cards and videotaped mail handler Robert Hart as he processed them.
Prosecutors say the surveillance tape shows Hart removing a cutting instrument from his pocket. The marked bills were allegedly found in his pocket.
