RI officials watching other for-profit schools
(PROVIDENCE, RI) The state’s office of higher education says it’s keeping an eye on other for-profit schools in the wake of the sudden closure of a career technical school.
Officials from the U.S. Department of Education, the state’s higher education office and state police combed through the offices of the Sawyer School over the weekend looking for student records. The school abruptly closed on New Year’s Day abandoning some 300 students in Rhode Island and 12-hundred in Connecticut.
Spokesman for the Office of Higher Education, Mike Trainor says the state is working to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.
“We have taken a close look at all the other schools in the state to make sure that none of them are in this kind of condition, okay. We are closely monitoring a couple but there is no immediate danger that we are aware of, of another closure.”
Trainor would not say which schools the state is monitoring.
