R.I.P. Doane Hulick
Doane Hulick, a fine Providence City Hall and federal and state courts reporter for the Providence Journal, has died after a courageous five-year battle against advanced lung cancer. He was 73.
Hulick, a native of North Carolina, was a great story teller both in print and in person. An accomplished sailor, he was married to Providence Journal reporter Tracy Breton, who also teaches journalism at Brown University. Doane and Tracy lived in Cranston’s Edgewood neighborhood.
He was that rare reporter who was great at math and science. He loved his lab retrievers. As a City Hall reporter, Hulick was known as a tough, hard-working and tenacious scribe. But his style was accompanied by a wonderful wit; he was the perfect companion for dinner and drinks.
Hulick was a smart and well-read man who grasped the world of computers and the Internet long before most of his print journalism colleagues. He was often called upon by friends for advice on how to navigate the latest in software and computer equipment.
Tall and handsome, he had a wide smile and was fun to be around. He and Tracy forged a great life together and they loved nothing so much as being gracious dinner hosts at their home for their many friends. Tracy and Doane were devoted to each other and she was with him every step of the way as he fought the scourge of cancer by embracing experimental treatments at Dana Farber in Boston.
Even as his health waned, Hulick didn’t complain. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. at the Jones Walton Sheridan Funeral Home at 1895 Broad Street in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston.
