PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee says he is gratified that the case of a man accused in a fatal shooting will remain in Rhode Island. An appeals court in Boston ruled Thursday that Jason Pleau can stand trial in the state, instead of being transferred to federal courts. Earlier this year Chafee refused to surrender Pleau to federal officials, because he could have faced the death penalty if convicted in federal court. The death penalty is illegal in Rhode Island. Chafee said in a statement that his interest was not in defending Jason Pleau, but in protecting states' rights and sovereignty.
