National Advocate Praises Nursing Industry In Rhode Island

Nurses need a place at the table as the nation reshapes its healthcare landscape. That’s according to Dr. Susan Hassmiller, the senior advisor for nursing for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Hassmiller has been touring the state this week, discussing the future of nursing.

She said because of the economy, older nurses are working longer, making it harder for recent graduates to land a job. Hassmiller applauds Rhode Island for helping nursing students with its state-wide residency.

Will State House hijinks derail Dynamo House nursing plan?

Tis the high season of summer in the Ocean State and the time of hijinks at the State House. As the hours dwindle towards adjournment, items big and small sometimes get lost in the last-minute shuffle as the competing egos in the House and Senate square off.

One very important economic development and education issue to watch: the fate of the resolution needed to move forward the plan to revive a gateway to the old Jewelry District in Providence by putting a nursing school in the old Dynamo Building, the onetime South Street power station.

New Life Could Come to "Dynamo House" in Providence

New life is coming to the old "Dynamo House" that's sat empty in downtown Providence for 13 years.

The old South Street power station in Providence’s jewelry district has been vacant for well over a decade. But it’s about to get a facelift and a new life in the state’s higher education system.

Brown University has announced plans to re-develop the century-old South Street power station, also known as the Dynamo House, into a shared nursing education center and administrative offices.  The nursing center will be part of the joint nursing school run by the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. The administrative offices will be used by Brown.
