Brown Statement on Missing Student, Now Confirmed Dead

Brown University President Christina Paxson sent the following letter to members of the Brown community after receiving confirmation that a body found in Providence is that of missing Brown student Sunil Tripathi.

Members of the Brown Community,

It is with profound sadness that I write to share news that the state medical examiner has confirmed the death of Brown student Sunil Tripathi.

Examiner Working to ID Body Pulled from India Point

A state medical examiner is examining a body pulled from the water off of India Point in Providence. Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements told Rhode Island Public Radio that police suspect the body may be that of missing Brown University student Sunil Tripathi.  Department of Health spokeswoman Dara Chadwick says it may take a little time to identify the body.

“I can’t really give you a definitive time as to when we might know. I don’t know that we’ll be able to confirm an ID today. But, again, the exam is being done today," said Chadwick.

Examiner to Help ID Body Found in Water

A state medical examiner is expected to determine Wednesday whether a body found in Providence off of India Point is that of missing Brown student Sunil Tripathi.

Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements tells RIPR that police suspect the body found Tuesday may be that of Tripathi.

Tripathi has been missing since he left his apartment in mid-March.

His family has made an energetic effort to find him through social media and other approaches.

Family of Missing Brown Student Horrified by Erroneous Link to Boston Bombings

It’s been about six weeks since Brown University philosophy major Sunil Tripathi disappeared. For a few hours he was erroneously linked to the Boston Marathon bombings. His family was horrified that he was rumored to be involved. 

Sunil’s brother, Ravi Tripathi, stopped by our studios to talk with Rhode Island Public Radio’s Flo Jonic.

Sunil "Sunny" Tripathi is six-foot tall, last seen wearing a black ski jacket and black hat with a Philadelphia Eagles logo. Anyone with information should call the Providence or Brown University police.

Family Hopes Facebook Video Will Reach Missing Brown Student

It’s been a little over three weeks since Brown University philosophy major Sunil “Sunny” Tripathi disappeared. His family has posted an online video in hopes of reaching out to him.

The video, which will be posted on Facebook, contains messages of love from Sunny Tripathi’s family, who remain in Providence looking for him.  The missing man’s brother, Ravi Tripathi, says the hope is that Sunny will see it and come home.

Surveillance Video May Shed Light on Missing Student's Location

The family of a missing Brown student has found what they hope will be a break in the case.  New surveillance video shows a man believed to be 22-year-old Sunil "Sunny" Tripathi on a street near Brown University.  The footage was taken around 1:30 a.m. on March 16th, the last day Tripathi was seen.  The family believes it may provide clues about the route Tripathi took before he disappeared.

Several Tips but No Solid Leads on Missing Brown Student

The family of a missing Brown student says while tips are pouring in, there are still no significant leads. The 22-year-old has been missing since March 16th.  Providence Police had said that the family thought Sunil Tripathi committed suicide, but the family is now ruling that out.

The father of Sunil “Sunny” Tripathi  says every day the family calls homeless shelters, hospitals and is plastering fliers up in areas his son liked to visit, hoping that someone knows where he is.

Search Continues for Missing Brown Student

The FBI has joined the search for a missing Brown University student, who disappeared from his Providence apartment earlier this month. Sunil Tripathi was last seen on March 16th. His sister, Sangeeta Tripathi, says the 22-year-old philosophy student had taken a leave of absence from Brown, but his disappearance came as a shock to friends and family.

Family Fears Missing Brown Student Killed Himself

Student Sunil Tripathi was last seen on March 16th.

The family of a missing Brown University student has told police they fear he’s killed himself.  Providence Police searched portions of Narragansett Bay and the Seekonk River in hopes of finding the body of 22-year-old Sunil Tripathi, a Brown University philosophy student who vanished March 16th.  Providence Police Sgt. Carl Weston says the student’s family fears he killed himself.
