There is a new member of the legal team representing Katherine Russell the widow of one of the suspected Boston Marathon bombers. Russell has added Joshua Dratel, an attorney with special expertise in terrorism cases. She continues to be represented by the Providence Firm DeLuca and Weizenbaum, though the firm specializes in medical malpractice.
Katherine Russell, the North Kingstown native who is the widow of suspected marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, has added a new person to her legal team, someone with expertise handling cases involving terrorism. Her original lawyers come from a small Providence firm called DeLuca and Weizenbaum.
They specialize in medical malpractice. Rhode Island Public Radio's Flo Jonic looks into how the firm ended up representing Katherine Russell, and what her legal options as the probe continues into what she knew about her husband's activities.
The older of the two Boston bombing suspects worked out at a boxing gym in Providence a couple of years ago, but no one noticed anything strange about him.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev worked out at the Big Six Boxing Academy in Providence several times in the latter half of 2011. Gym owner Roland Estrada said there was nothing unusual about the young man, who two years later would allegedly bomb the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring scores more.
"No inclination of what he was going to do," Estrada said. "You know, it’s not the same person."
The family of the Rhode Island woman who was married to one of the suspected bombers is not commenting to reporters waiting Saturday outside their North Kingstown home.
The blinds are drawn, curtains pulled at the khaki colored, two-story house on the corner of the leafy cul-de-sac. The family of Katherine Russell had been living quietly in this North Kingstown neighborhood until the connection was made that Katherine was married and has a child with Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died in a shoot-out early Friday.
