Rhody Votes '14: A Heated Debate Over The ConCon

Voters will decide on Tuesday whether to approve a Constitutional Convention, known as the ConCon. This is a delegation of elected representative who would recommend changes to the state’s constitution.

Rhode Island Public Radio’s Scott MacKay gathered two men for a lively debate: Phil West, retired Executive Director of Common Cause of Rhode Island for the ConCon and Steven Brown, Executive Director of the ACLU of Rhode Island against it.

Pell, Raimondo, Taveras Sign On To A “People’s Pledge”

A so-called “people’s pledge” has been hammered out and agreed to by the three leading democratic candidates running for governor. The goal is to limit outside spending.

To limit that outside spending, Clay Pell, Gina Raimondo, and Angel Taveras have agreed to a pledge calling for any candidate who benefits from an ad bought by an outside group to make a charitable donation for the same amount of the ad buy.

Dem’s In RI Governor’s Racing Hammering Out A People’s Pledge

Campaign managers of the three main democrats running for governor met Monday to start hammering out a pledge to limit outside spending in the race. John Marion, president of the good government group, Common Cause, facilitated the two-hour meeting.

The so-called People’s Pledge made headlines in the Massachusetts senate race between Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren. In that race the candidates agreed to discourage outside spending on TV, radio and the internet, but not direct mail.

Ethics Concerns Raised over Higher Ed Pick

Common Cause has asked Governor Lincoln Chafee to withdraw his recommendation of attorney Eva-Marie Mancuso for interim state commissioner of higher education.

Mancuso is currently chair of the State Board of Education, and Common Cause says that should bar her from consideration. The good-government group cites ethics rules that prohibit state board members from taking paid positions within the agencies they oversee.
