Armenian Genocide Ceremony Today at Statehouse

Rhode Island’s General Assembly today will commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Armenian genocide. Rep. Katherine Kazarian, D-East Providence, will introduce a resolution calling on President Obama to formally recognize the genocide.

In a joint ceremony with the Armenian National Committee of Rhode Island, the ceremony will feature clergy from the state’s three Armenian churches, followed by the presentation of colors and the singing of Mer Hairenick, the Armenian national anthem. A speaking program is also planned.

Raimondo flip-flops on helping RI municipalities

Oh,  the delicious ironies of Rhode Island politics: Gov. Gina Raimondo posed with a flock of mayors and local officials this afternoon to tout her new executive order that is meant to help Rhode Island cities and towns save money.

As part of her executive order, Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, the former Cumberland mayor, will lead an effort to talk to municipal leaders and get their ideas for saving taxpayer dollars, according to RIPR’s report by our political reporter, the intrepid Ian Donnis.

R.I.P.: State House Reporter Jim Baron's Service

Veteran Rhode Island political reporter Jim Baron was remembered this afternoon as a journalist of great integrity, ability, dedication and humor at a celebration of his life at the Bellows Funeral Chapel in Lincoln, R.I.

Baron, who died January 5 at age 57 after a protracted illness, was a reporter for the Pawtucket Times and Woonsocket Call whose career spanned more than three decades, most of it spent covering Rhode Island politics and the General Assembly.

AFL-CIO endorses Catherine Taylor for lt. gov, first Republican to get labor's nod

In a rare move, the Rhode Island AFL-CIO has endorsed a Republican candidate for statewide office – Catherine Taylor, who is running for lieutenant governor against Democrat Dan McKee, the mayor of Cumberland.

In a statement, George Nee, president of the state AFL-CIO, said, `` the Rhode Island AFL-CIO is proud to endorse Catherine Taylor for the office of lieutenant governor.’’
