East Side voters snub Buddy Cianci

Buddy Cianci’s steep hill : Results from the Hope High School polling place on Providence’s East Side. The results show a huge landslide for Democrat Jorge Elorza. Elorza had 823 votes in the precinct, Cianci pulled a paltry 163 and Republican Dan Harrop had 31.

The same polling place carried good news for Gina Raimondo, who polled 805 to Allan Fung’s 151 and Bob Healey’s 50. Thanks to Brown super intern Emily Woolridge for harvesting these results.

Raimondo RI’s First Female Gov, Elorza Wins Providence Mayor’s Race

Gina Raimondo made history Tuesday night as the first woman to get elected as governor of Rhode Island. Raimondo is also the first Democrat to win the state’s top job in 22 years.

Raimondo beat Republican rival Allan Fung with unofficial numbers showing her with 40 percent to Fung’s 36 percent, with Moderate Party candidate Robert Healey drawing 22 percent of the vote.

President Obama To Tout Stellar GDP Growth In RIC Speech

When he visits Rhode Island Friday, President Barack Obama will speak about the improving national economy and the latest Gross Domestic Product data that was released today by the federal government.

Obama is scheduled to arrive at Green State Airport  this evening and stay overnight in Providence. While the White House is not disclosing where the president will stay, sources in Providence say it will be the Omni Hotel downtown, which is attached to the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Providence Mayoral Candidates Spar In Final Broadcast Debate Before Election

The three candidates for mayor of Providence took part in a spirited debate last night at Rhode Island College.  The candidates mostly rehashed their stances while tossing sharp remarks at one another.

With a boisterous audience, it didn’t take long for things to get heated between independent Buddy Cianci, Democrat Jorge Elorza, and Republican Daniel Harrop. Cianci took aim at Harrop for contributing to Elorza’s campaign and saying he might vote for the Democrat.

A twice convicted felon, Cianci is running again for mayor. New Anti-Jorge Elorza PAC Launched From South County

A new political action committee has formed out of South County against Providence mayoral candidate Jorge Elorza.

The latest twist in a Providence mayoral campaign that has seen as many as hula-hoop contest:  A new anti-Jorge Elorza independent expenditure political action committee financed by Morris Flancbaum.

In documents filed with the Rhode Island Board of Elections, the new pac, named the ``Committee for Safer Neighborhoods and Lower Taxes’’ reports a $38,648 television advertising buy with Cox Cable.

GOP Mayoral Candidate Harrop Considers Dropping Out Of Race

Republican Daniel Harrop previously said he would not drop out of the Providence Mayoral race, but a new poll showing he has only 3 percent of the vote could change his mind.

The Republican running in the Providence mayor's race said he's considering dropping out of the race. Daniel Harrop said his three percent showing in the Brown University Taubman Center poll released Thursday forced him to consider the option.

Harrop said he will meet with his team to discuss how bowing out would affect the race, before making a decision. Harrop has sharply criticized independent Buddy Cianci, a former mayor and twice convicted felon.

Elorza Says He'll Make Reducing Providence Car Tax A Priority

Elorza plans to reduce the city's car tax if elected, which he says hurts Providence's poorer residents.

Providence mayoral candidate Jorge Elorza said he’ll make it a priority to reduce the bite of the car tax if he wins the race for City Hall.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo joined Elorza at a Silver Lake car lot today Wednesday to talk about the issue. Elorza said it’s important to raise Providence’s car tax exemption of a thousand dollars since the tax hits low-income residents the hardest.
