Rhode Island Education Commissioner Gist Going To Tulsa

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist has gotten the votes to become Tulsa's superintendent of schools.

In a statement, Gist said it was a difficult decision, but she welcomed the opportunity to lead an urban school district.

She also noted that Tulsa is where her family lives.

"I know that Rhode Islanders can certainly recognize the attraction we have to our hometowns, and it would be a special honor for me to lead the district where I attended public school throughout my childhood," Gist wrote.

Vote Expected Monday On Gist

The Tulsa School Board may vote Monday evening on whether to name Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist their new superintendent of schools.

Gist appears poised to get the job, after the only other finalist dropped out of the search at the end of last week.

Gist has said the opportunity to return to her hometown was too good to pass up. She previously said she wanted to stay in Rhode Island, but Governor Gina Raimondo has been slow to announce whether she wants Gist to remain the state's education commissioner.

Gist Becomes Lone Contender For Tulsa Job

Looks like Education Commissioner Deborah Gist is headed back to her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tulsa World reports today that the other candidate in the search for a new superintendent of schools has dropped out of contention.

The Tulsa School Board is expected to take an official vote on Monday.

Tulsa Delays Vote on Gist

Tulsa education officials say they need more time to consider Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and one other finalist in their search for a new superintendent.

The board had scheduled a vote for Monday, but Tulsa World reports they’ve delayed the vote until at least February 2nd.

Gist, who is a Tulsa native, has said she would like to remain in Rhode Island, but the opportunity to return to her hometown was too good to pass up.

R.I. state Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Deborah Gist has confirmed that she is a finalist for the Superintendent of Schools post in her home city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gist's statement came after the Tulsa World newspaper reported that she is a finalist for the post.

Gist Up For Superintendent's Job In Tulsa?

State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist is reported to be a finalist in Tulsa’s search for a new superintendent of schools.

Tulsa World says multiple sources confirm that Gist is one of two finalists scheduled for interviews later this week. Tulsa’s current superintendent is stepping down at the end of June.

High Stakes Testing Back On The Agenda

The State Council on Elementary and Secondary Education is expected to vote tonight on new rules for high school graduation.

The proposal would finalize a delay in the use of of standardized test scores for a diploma until 2020.

Test scores were supposed to become a requirement last year, but state lawmakers voted to pause the rule until 2017 after an outcry from some students, teachers and community groups. State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist then proposed extending the delay until 2020.

Deadline Passes For Notice To Renew Contract For Deborah Gist

December has come and gone, along with the deadline for the State Board of Education to give notice of its intent to renew the contract for Education Commissioner Deborah Gist.

The current contract, which expires in June, contains a six-month notification requirement if the board plans to renew. State Department of Education Spokesman Elliot Krieger says the state can still retain Gist, if the board chooses to negotiate a new contract.

Raimondo Mum On Gist Future

Governor-Elect Gina Raimondo has no immediate plans to hire a new commissioner for K-12 education.

Current Commissioner Deborah Gist has been controversial because of her support for testing as a requirement for high school graduation and teacher evaluations.

Raimondo says she’s in no hurry to make a decision about Gist.

"She’s doing a great job," Raimondo said last week. "Her contract’s not up until the end of June, so there’s really no urgency to move on that one in particular."

RI Sees Drop in 8th Grade Science Scores

New test results show just 23 percent of Rhode Island 8th graders scored proficient or better in science,  a decline of seven percentage points from last year.

Some individual schools and districts also saw steep declines in their scores.

Education officials held off on releasing the results of the NECAP Science test while experts conducted an independent review of the test and the scoring. 

But in the end, Education Commissioner Deborah Gist said they found no evidence this year's test was more difficult than last year.
