Providence Students Voice Their Hopes For State's New Education Commissioner

These Providence students say the new PARCC exam is more disruptive during the school day than the prior state test.

Rhode Island is looking for a new leader for K-12 public schools as controversy grows over standardized testing and charter schools. So what do students want from the next commissioner of education?

Rhode Island Public Radio education reporter Elisabeth Harrison asked that question of three Providence students: 16-year-old Kendall Hall, 16-year-old Diane Gonzales and 15-year-old Xilian Sansoucy. They are members of the student advocacy groups Young Voices and the Providence Student Union.

Gov. Chafee Stands By Appointment of Mancuso As Interim Higher Ed Commissioner

Governor Lincoln Chafee says he stands behind his decision to appoint Eva Marie Mancuso as the state’s interim commissioner for higher education.  But Chafee says he knows the state Ethics Commission could scrap the appointment.

Ethics Concerns Raised over Higher Ed Pick

Common Cause has asked Governor Lincoln Chafee to withdraw his recommendation of attorney Eva-Marie Mancuso for interim state commissioner of higher education.

Mancuso is currently chair of the State Board of Education, and Common Cause says that should bar her from consideration. The good-government group cites ethics rules that prohibit state board members from taking paid positions within the agencies they oversee.
