On Monday, August 18, Jane Chu, chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts will touch down in Pawtucket, Providence and East Providence to meet with non-profit and community leaders and local artists.

Sen. Reed Supports Obama Iraq Air Strikes

U.S. Sen Jack Reed, D-R.I., supports President Barack Obama’s military air strikes against Islamic militants in Iraq.

In a statement, Reed, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that while he supports the president’s   current air strike policy, he does not back sending ground troops back into Iraq for a extended period.

Sens. Reed, Warren Durbin Urge Obama Take Executive Action On Corporate Overseas Tax Moves

Jack Reed is among a group of U.S. Senators pushing for reforms on taxing corporations that move operations overseas.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I.,  has joined with fellow Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Dick Durbin of Illinois in urging President Obama to use an executive order to reduce or get rid of tax breaks for companies that move their headquarters overseas to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

In  letter to the president the three Democratic senators stated that while Congress considers a legislative solution there is a need for swift action by the president.

President Barack Obama Expected To Visit Newport In August

The website Politico reports President Barack Obama is scheduled to be in the resort town on August 29th. 

He's expected to be at a fundraising event in Newport for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. 

The site reports that though the president's approval rating remains rather low, he's still a big draw on the fundraising circuit.  As mid-term elections approach, Obama has attended 16 fundraisers this cycle.

Zaccaria Unveils Republican Challenge to Jack Reed

Republican Mark Zaccaria, a former state GOP chairman who ran unsuccessfully against US Representative Jim Langevin in 2008 and 2010, on Monday unveiled his challenge against US Senator Jack Reed.

Although Republicans hope to gain control of the US Senate, Reed's seat is considered among the safest in the chamber.

R.I. House finally Ratifies 17th U.S. Constitutional Amendment: direct election of U.S. senators

At the behest of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Cale Keable, D-Burrillville, the Rhode Island House has finally voted to ratify the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,  which reqired direct election of U.S. Senators.

Before the amendment took effect in 1913, senators were elected by state legislators. That system was widely criticized for breeding corruption as senate aspirants bribed lawmakers to secure the votes needed to win senate seats.

Sen. Reed: Congress Needs To Help Fix VA’s Problems

Sen. Jack Reed is calling on Congress to address the systemic challenges plaguing the VA healthcare system.

Reed made the statement just hours after Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned amid a growing cover up of long wait times for healthcare. Reed said the next secretary needs to start the job with a top to bottom review of what’s causing the backlog.

More Federal Funding Coming To RI To Clean Up Contaminated Sites

The new WaterFire headquarters in Providence are being cleaned up using federal funds designated to clean up Brownfield and superfund sites.

Rhode Island has received more than $2.7 million to clean up contaminated properties in Pawtucket, Providence, and Westerly.

Senator Jack Reed says these federal grants awarded through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Program will help local governments protect public health and redevelop former industrial sites for better use. Reed says it’ll also benefit the economy by creating jobs and increasing the value of surrounding properties.
