Good evening, and thank you for having me here to celebrate with all of you.

As the nation’s only independent Governor, I am here tonight to join with my Democratic friends, on the eve of an election critical to the future of our children and their country.

As a former Republican, I represent a group of Americans who all too often have no one to speak for them.

When news broke last week that Governor Lincoln Chafee would speak at the Democratic National Convention, it no doubt caused some head-scratching here in Rhode Island; Chafee’s approval ratings have been poor, and the governor, while sometimes praised for his candor, isn’t exactly the smoothest of public speakers.

Chafee’s night in the national Democratic spotlight

In 30 years in Rhode Island politics, Lincoln Chafee has been elected to every office from Warwick city council, to U.S. Senate and governor. He never has been a Democrat. Yet now independent  Governor Chafee will have the biggest speaking role any Rhode Island political figure has had at any Democratic National Convention since 1964, when Sen. John Pastore was the keynote convention speaker.

Chafee invited to Democratic National Convention

Gov. Lincoln Chafee will join such Rhode Island Democratic Party leaders as House Speaker Gordon Fox, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte between September 4th to 6th.

Chafee, a Republican-turned-independent, has been invited to the convention because of his support for President Obama, says Democratic State Chairman Edwin Pacheco.

Chafee is one of 35 national “co-chairs’’ of Obama’s reelection campaign.

Gov. Chafee son charged in beer party investigation

UPDATE: Governor Chafee has issued a statement saying that “Caleb will accept responsibility for his actions.” The governor also said that he and his wife “have taken this matter seriously.”

Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s son, Caleb Chafee, has been charged with a count of  violating  Rhode Island’s social host law that bars serving alcohol to people not old enough to meet the state’s 21-year old drinking age.

Chafee names Land as receiver for 38 Studios

Here’s the release from the office of Governor Lincoln Chafee:

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee today announced that attorney Richard J. Land will serve as 38 Studios’ Receiver as the Governor and the State of Rhode Island work to recoup as many taxpayer dollars as possible. Mr. Land has served as a court-appointed Receiver for a variety of businesses and has represented clients in all levels of state court in Rhode Island, in the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island, and the United State Bankruptcy Court for the District of Rhode Island.
