Rhode Island Public Radio columnist Bob Kerr, who spent two years in the Marines in the 1960's, reflects on the shootings at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee. One of the victims, Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan of Massachusetts, will be laid to rest on Tuesday.

Providence police say they believe Tuesday night’s shooting was targeted. Five people were injured, one seriously during the overnight shooting.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin said it’s unclear exactly what happened, but there was a party and people hanging around outside in the Chad Brown neighborhood when shots were fired, possibly from a moving vehicle.

The former Naval reservist who killed at least 12 people in Washington, DC, yesterday visited Newport in August. Aaron Alexis told Newport police that he was hearing voices.

Two officers responded to the Marriott hotel on America’s Cup Avenue for a harassment incident at about 6:30 in the morning on August 7th. According to a police report, Alexis told the officers he was a naval contractor and travels often.

The Federal Aviation Administration has some questions for a helicopter pilot who allowed some of his passengers to fire guns from the chopper Sunday.  It happened in a rural area of Charlestown.

Late Sunday afternoon, Charlestown police received calls about men shooting handguns, shotguns and rifles from a helicopter.  They were firing at a junked car. Charlestown Police Chief Jeffrey Allen calls it reckless behavior that frightened people on the ground.

Two suspects have been charged in the murder of a 12-year-old Providence girl. Police say 21-year-old Branden Castro and 20-year-old Ricardo Vasquez have been charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and other felony charges.

12-year-old Aynis Vargas was shot and killed at a party last month in the Hartford Avenue housing development. Three women were also injured.
