Chafee win plaudits for advancing women in RI government

Gov. Lincoln Chafee may be a lame duck but he is getting some love from the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island and Vision 2020 for his appointments of women to Rhode Island state boards and commissions.

The report by the advocates of women in government shows that women now hold 34 percent of state commission and board appointments. Since taking office Chafee has appointed 441 women to boards and commissions out of 1,071 total appointments.

RI GOP Trying to Cultivate Female Candidates

There's a big gender gap for Republican women in the General Assembly; of 113 legislative seats, there are only two GOP female lawmakers: Patricia Morgan and Doreen Costa. By comparison, there are 28 female Democrats between the House and Senate.

Mighty Muffy: RIP Susan Farmer

Susan Farmer, who in 1982 became the first women elected to statewide office in Rhode Island when as a Republican she ousted a longtime Democratic incumbent to become secretary of state, has died after a protracted battle with cancer. She was 71.
