Department of Environmental Protection en Advocates Gearing Up For Another Try at Plastic Bag Ban <p>Backers of a plastic bag ban have been busy collecting petition signatures this summer.&nbsp; Environment Rhode Island says it has amassed ten thousand signatures urging the General Assembly to take up the issue once again.&nbsp;</p><p>Rhode Island would have become the first state in the country to ban plastic grocery bags under a bill that died in the last legislative session.&nbsp;&nbsp; Channing Jones of Environment Rhode Island says they are not deterred by their out-of-the-gate loss.</p> Mon, 16 Sep 2013 12:35:38 +0000 Flo Jonic 21717 at Shellfishing Area Closed <p>A Rhode Island shell fishing area is closed.&nbsp; The Conimicut Triangle and Area A of the upper Narragansett Bay is closed because of discharge from a waste water treatment plant in East Providence.<br><br>The Department of Environmental Protection says the discharge had elevated fecal coliform levels.<br><br>The waters will be closed to shell fishing until sunrise Tuesday March 5th. &nbsp;<br><br>The DEM says the Bucklin Point Waste Water Treatment Facility is working with the Department staff to meet stricter discharge limits.<br> Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:33:00 +0000 Lydia Rogers 10960 at
