Former Brown President Simmons Honored by French Government

Former Brown University president Ruth Simmons is being honored by the French government for her contributions to the advancement of French arts and culture.

Brown has been named Chevalier in the French National Order of the Legion of Honor. The award is the highest decoration offered by the French government.

Simmons is not only fluent in French but has written about French-speaking authors and poets.

Animal Rights Activists Demonstrate at Brown University

Brown University was the target of an animal rights demonstration Sunday.

About a dozen people picketed Brown carrying signs saying “Stop Testing on Animals Now.” The demonstration was organized by the group “In Defense of Animals.” Organizer Christen Baker says the animal experimentation going on at Brown and other universities is unnecessary.

"There are alternatives that need to be explored. They’re safer. They’re cheaper and they’re accurate."

Brown Announces Honorary Degree Recipients

Actor turned Director Ben Affleck will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts during Brown University’s commencement next month. Affleck’s film Argo won best picture at the Academy Awards in February, but he was famously snubbed by the Oscar committee when it came to a best director nomination.

Brown will also confer honorary degrees on writer and MIT professor Junot Diaz and bacteriologist Stanley Falkow, along with three others. Falkow will host a forum on infectious diseases as part of commencement weekend.

Examiner Working to ID Body Pulled from India Point

A state medical examiner is examining a body pulled from the water off of India Point in Providence. Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements told Rhode Island Public Radio that police suspect the body may be that of missing Brown University student Sunil Tripathi. Department of Health spokeswoman Dara Chadwick says it may take a little time to identify the body.

“I can’t really give you a definitive time as to when we might know. I don’t know that we’ll be able to confirm an ID today. But, again, the exam is being done today," said Chadwick.
