Flags at half staff in RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has ordered flags in the state lowered to half-staff in remembrance of the six people killed during an assassination attempt on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.


Chafee on Monday ordered flags lowered until sunset on Friday to honor the dead and the 14 injured outside a supermarket in Tucson on Saturday.


Chafee calls it an unthinkable tragedy that has brought him and all Rhode Islanders great personal sadness.

Treatment plants getting a green makeover

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Wastewater treatments plants damaged by last year's floods will be getting an energy-efficient upgrade.

Environmental Protection Agency Director Curt Spalding says while touring the storm damaged treatment plants last year he asked himself, "what if they could be rebuilt to be more energy efficient?"

There's already a program rolling out across New England, says Spaulding, where treatment plants are saving as much energy as their spending creating a net-zero output.

Central Falls receiver to stay on another 30 days

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor Lincoln Chafee's office says it's extending the term of the state-appointed receiver for Central Falls.

Receiver Mark Pfieffer's six-month contract would have expired Tuesday, instead, Pfieffer has agreed to stay on for at least another 30 days.

Chafee praised Pfieffer's performance in a released statement, saying he has made significant progress in a very difficult situation.

Security beefed up at event attended by congressional delegation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is having an impact on congressional security here in Rhode Island.

Normally there is no security at Rhode Island press conferences attended by members of the state's congressional delegation. But at a news conference attended by three members of the Rhode Island congressional delegation a trio of Warwick police officers provided security.

Quick pace for Gifford replacement

Providence, RI – The Chafee administration is wasting no time in finding a replacement for the Director of the Department of Health, Dr. David Gifford.

The Governor's office says it hopes to find a new director by the time Gifford leaves his position at the end of February.

The administration plans to announce the members of a search committee by the end of the week. The Governor's spokesman says the committee will not limit itself to candidates from within the Ocean State.

Congressional delegation expresses shock over Ariz. shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – "Shocked and devastated." That was Congressman Jim Langevin's reaction to the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. But Langevin says he will do nothing special to enhance his personal security.


They sat together on the Armed Services Committee and Congressman Jim Langevin calls Gabrielle Giffords a good friend. He was horrified to hear she was shot while meeting with constituents at a Tucson grocery store.

Gifford quits position as director of Health Department

Providence, RI – The director of the Rhode Island Department of Health is stepping down from his position.

Dr. David Gifford submitted his resignation to Governor Chafee late Friday afternoon, to the surprise of his staff and the administration. He says he's been thinking about the direction of his life, and he wants to spend more time working on improving the quality and delivery of health care.
