One Year After the Flood: Rebuilding in Cranston

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A year ago this week severe flooding damaged homes and businesses on a massive scale. The floods dealt a significant blow to the state economy by devastating scores of small businesses.

Alfred Schoeninger still gets emotional while talking about the flood that almost destroyed his small business, the Cranston Casting Company. But a year later, his sadness in looking back comes mixed with a smile and a laugh.

VT governor campaigns for same-sex marriage in RI

PROVIDENCE, RI – Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin travels to Rhode Island Thursday to campaign for same-sex marriage in the Ocean State.

Democrat Shumlin leads the state that was the first in the nation to recognize gay marriage. Vermont approved gay civil unions in 2000 and full same-sex marriage rights in 2009.

Another agency downgrades Providence's bonds

Providence, RI – By MEGAN HALL

For the third time in two weeks, a bond rating agency has downgraded Providence's municipal bonds.

Standard and Poor's today reduced the capitol city's rating from A- to BBB+.

David Ortiz with the Mayor's office says the city is working to get those ratings back up.

"The Taveras administration is taking decisive action, that has been acknowledged by all three rating agencies," he says, "and we are headed in the right direction to eventually improve the city's bond ratings."

State lawmaker faces backlash after criticizing student group

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A state lawmaker is under fire after criticizing a student support group at Tiverton High School. Rep. Dan Gordon said members of the Gay Straight Alliance should be prohibited from meeting in the school, because it receives public funding.

Gordon claims the club, started by a student to address issues such as bullying, is an inappropriate use of school time.

R.I. House considers pardon for last man executed by the state

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee heard strong testimony Wednesday in support of a resolution asking Governor Lincoln Chafee to pardon the last man executed by the state.

The year was 1845 and the condemned was a poor Irish immigrant named John Gordon.

Chafee, new DMV head promise shorter wait times

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor Lincoln Chafee Wednesday vowed to cut waiting times for frustrated motorists at the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

During a news conference at DMV headquarters in Cranston, Chafee announced Lisa Holley is replacing Sally Strachan as the agency's director. Holley most recently served as chief legal counsel for the state Department of Public Safety. Holley says a new team will assess what's wrong with the DMV and set performance-based goals.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A year ago this week severe flooding damaged homes and businesses on a massive scale. Flood waters soaked cities and towns across the state, but Cranston, Warwick and West Warwick were at the epicenter of the destruction. One casualty of the floods was the Warwick Wastewater Treatment Facility.
