Amtrak policy allows unloaded guns on some trains

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Amtrak says a new policy allowing unloaded guns on trains will not apply to the Acela and Northeast Regional lines that run through Providence.

Starting December 15th passengers will be allowed to pack unloaded guns in checked baggage, providing the trains and train stations offer checked baggage service.

Amtrak said that means the gun policy applies mainly to long distance routes. Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm said passengers also need to give Amtrak 24-hour notice.

Chafee appoints Roberts to health care panel

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts will lead a panel for Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee on implementing the federal health care reform plan.


Chafee says Roberts is a natural choice for the role because of her knowledge of healthcare.


"This is a great chance to work together," Chafee says. "She has already spent four years working on this very, very important subject, so I look forward to working together again. That's the key to success."

Employee vaccination rates highest in Newport, South County hospitals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Newport and South County Hospitals report the highest employee flu vaccination rates in Rhode Island for the 2009-2010 season.

The state's average flu vaccination rate for hospital employees is 61 percent, while Newport and South County hospital employee vaccination rates were over 80 percent.

Peter Hanney, Communications Coordinator for the Rhode Island Department of Health, says the department is looking to improve the state's averages.

Chafee: closing deficit means cuts to govt.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee says closing an almost 300 million dollar deficit for the next fiscal year will require significant cuts to state government.


Rhode Island faces a deep deficit for the fiscal year starting next July first due to the loss of federal stimulus money. Chafee says closing that gap will require reductions in spending by many state departments.
