Gas and home heating oil prices jump

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Gasoline and home heating oil prices are both up significantly from a week ago in Rhode Island.


Triple A New England says the average price for self serve regular gas is $3.36 a gallon. That's 15 cents higher than last week.


The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources reports the average price of home heating oil is now $3.65 a gallon, which is up a dime since last week.

R.I. gets $6M in federal money for conservation projects

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced Monday nearly $6 million in federal funding to help pay for conservation projects.

Reed says the money is generated from a tax on fishing and hunting gear, and protected from budget cuts taking place on Capitol Hill.

"A long time ago my colleagues were wise enough to figure out the connection, and actually the communities - the fishing community and the hunting community - endorsed this 70 years ago, and still endorse it," says Reed.

Body of missing Brown Univ. coach found in Conn.

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – A missing Brown University women's assistant soccer coach has been found dead three weeks after being reported missing.

Police said Sunday that 56-year-old Denis Chartier of Burrillville, R.I., was discovered dead inside his car on Saturday morning in a commuter parking lot off Route 395 in Griswold, Conn.

Police say the death is being investigated but no foul play is suspected.

Former N. Providence councilmen to enter pleas this week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three former North Providence town councilmen and a businessman are slated to plead guilty today and tomorrow to corruption charges in a series of bribery and extortion
schemes.

Former councilmen Joseph Burchfield and Raymond Douglas III are scheduled to enter their pleas in U.S. District Court in Providence today, as is Edward Imondi, a developer accused of acting as a middleman in the scheme.


The third former councilman, John Zambarano, is scheduled to enter his plea tomorrow.

RI mobster to enter guilty plea this week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Rhode Island mobster is due in court this week to plead guilty to a murder for hire plot.


Anthony "The Saint" St. Laurent is scheduled to change his plea to guilty during a federal court appearance Tuesday. According to court documents, St. Laurent tried to hire various people to kill fellow Mafia member Robert DeLuca who had publicly accused St. Laurent of being a government informant.

Makers of sustainable vessel fight to dock in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tucked into Conley's Wharf in South Providence, a ramshackle barge bobs peacefully at the end of a pier off Allens Avenue. The vessel looks more like a floating tree house than a typical motorboat, but owner Zachary Weindel says his home, named Landlord Independent, is a part of the industrial waterfront.

"The boat really blends in, with the cedar poles that stick up and the dock it's kind of an urban camoflage," says Weindel.

Gifford on 6 years as Director of the Department of Health

Providence, RI – This week is officially the end of Dr. David Gifford's term as the Rhode Island Director of the Department of Health. Gifford resigned from the post back in January and is spending his last days on vacation. Before he left, Gifford met with WRNI's Health Care reporter Megan Hall to reflect on his six years at the department.

By lunch time on his last day at work, Dr. David Gifford's office was almost bare.
