RI congressional candidates meet at forum

Providence, R.I. – Congressional candidates vying to replace Rep. Patrick Kennedy in the U.S. House of Representatives are meeting at a forum.

Democrat Bill Lynch said at Thursday's forum that he is running because he believes Washington is broken and dominated by special interests. He says people are concerned their children won't remain in Rhode Island because of a lack of jobs.

Providence Mayor David Cicilline, also a Democrat, said America needs to start ending its involvement in Afghanistan and focus more on local infrastructure.

RI congressional hopefuls discuss stimulus, wars

Providence, R.I. – Candidates vying to replace Rep. Patrick Kennedy in the U.S. House of Representatives shared their views on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, energy policy and federal stimulus money during a forum at a senior citizens' residence on Thursday.

Several of the candidates decried what they said was the overwhelming influence of special interests in Washington. They expressed concerns that government was not doing enough for average citizens and said they feared an exodus of young adults from the state because of a lack of jobs.

Providence mayor to veto tax rate hike

Providence, R.I. – The Providence City Council has narrowly given final approval to a 25 percent increase in the city's property tax rate.

The measure also repeals a tax break for thousands of landlords who do not live in their properties.

But Mayor David Cicilline is vowing to veto the bill, which councilors say could prevent tax bills from going out by the July 30 deadline.
