State officials approve deal to bring Schilling company to RI

Providence, R.I. – It's a deal. The state Economic Development Corporation has agreed to guarantee a $75 million revenue bond for a start up video game company founded by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.

The vote was 9 to 1 with EDC board member Karl Wadensten dissenting. It means Curt Schilling will bring his video game company, 38 Studios LLC, to Rhode Island from its current home in Maynard, Massachusetts.

RI, Mass. sign agreement on wind power projects

Providence, R.I. – Rhode Island and Massachusetts have agreed to coordinate on potential wind power projects in a designated 400 square miles of federal waters.

An agreement announced Monday identifies an area for development that starts 12 miles southwest of Martha's Vineyard and reaches 20 miles into Rhode Island Sound.

Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in joint statements Monday that the agreement will serve as a roadmap as both states move toward offshore wind projects.

Former U.S. senator looks to head RI state government

Providence, R.I. – Last January, Lincoln Chafee was barely 12 minutes into his gubernatorial announcement when he touched upon one of the third rails of American politics - taxes.

"We have to make choices if we're going to be the master of our economic destiny in this state," Chafee said. "Rather than forcing our property taxes across Rhode Island, we should carefully examine a two-tier sales tax. Other states have this system and it is working."

Caprio says office move will save RI millions

Providence, R.I. – General Treasurer Frank Caprio says his office is saving Rhode Island about $4 million over the next 10 years by relocating from Providence to an unoccupied state-owned building in Warwick.

The move was approved by the state Retirement Board two weeks ago.

Caprio, a Democratic candidate for governor, issued a news release Monday about the move _ the same day his opponent, independent Lincoln Chafee, scheduled a press conference to announce his plans to make better use of unoccupied state-owned
buildings.

RI agency meets on plan to lure Schilling company

Providence, R.I. – Rhode Island's Economic Development Corporation is meeting to discuss offering a $75 million loan guarantee to a gaming company founded by former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.

The potential offer is aimed at encouraging the company, 38 Studios, to relocate from Massachusetts to Rhode Island.

The EDC is scheduled to discuss and likely vote Monday evening on the terms and conditions of the agreement, which have so far remained confidential.

Massachusetts looks to create last-minute jobs

Boston, MA – Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick says he wants to see the Legislature pass four bills that will help create jobs during the last week of the state's legislative session.

Patrick told reporters Monday that he hopes the Legislature sends him bills related to expanded gambling, health care costs, criminal records and capital for small businesses. He said all will stimulate job growth.

Average price of gasoline unchanged in RI

Providence, R.I. – A survey finds gas prices in RhodeIsland to be stabilizing as the summer moves along.

AAA Southern New England says the average price of self-serve regular is $2.73 per gallon, unchanged from last week and the previous week.

The Rhode Island average is a penny lower than the national average price of $2.74 per gallon.

AAA says its survey found prices in the state that ranged from as low as $2.57 to as high as $2.97 per gallon.
