Providence, R.I. – Today is Victory Day, which commemorates the Allied victory over Japan in World War II. Rhode Island is the last state left that still marks the day with a legal holiday. Charlestown, R.I. – The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a downed aircraft reported near Charlestown Beach.
The Coast Guard said Sunday that crews from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island searched an area of about 150 square miles. The Coast Guard received numerous calls Saturday night that a one-person ultralight aircraft went down in Block Island Sound.
The search has turned up nothing. The Coast Guard says that as of Sunday, there were no reports of missing aircraft or missing persons.
Providence, R.I. – Rhode Island environmental regulators have placed emergency restrictions on the state's most fruitful soft-shell clam harvesting area.
The Department of Environmental Management says the restrictions placed Thursday on the Conimicut Point shellfish beds are intended to prevent over-harvesting and a glut of soft-shell clams that have hit the market recently.
