The tide brought in more than just seawater Thursday morning at Second Beach in Middletown, RI as 6 dead seals washed ashore.
It remains unclear what caused the animals’ deaths. The animal rescue program at Mystic Aquiarium is working with the manager of Second Beach to get more information.
Dale Wolbrink, Senior Director of Public Relations at Mystic Aquarium, said it is unknown whether all 6 seals washed ashore at the same time because the bodies were so badly decomposed.
"We’re not going to be able to tell necessarily if it’s male or female. We’re not going to be able to tell how old it is. There’s just not a whole lot of information that we’re going to be able to deem from the level of decomposition to the seal bodies that are there," Wolbrink said.
Wolbrink said once they collect all the data they can find from the seals, beach personnel will bury them.
