Providence, RI – About 90 workers, including 50 reporters, have left the Providence Journal in the last six weeks, according the Providence Newspaper Guild. They have taken a buy out offer from the newspaper owner, the Belo Corporation.
Buyouts were offered to all staff members older than 55. They are intended to cut costs because of declines in advertising revenue. A total of 180 workers at the Providence Journal were offered buyout packages.
Several departing reporters say the newspaper will suffer because it has lost institutional knowledge and good coverage of local issues. Providence Journal officials have not commented.
