ACLU, RI Moderate Party try to block distribution of campaign funds

Providence, R.I. – The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is asking a federal judge to temporarily halt the state from distributing to the two major political parties campaign funds donated by tax payers on their income tax returns.

The law authorizing the account excludes independent candidates and new political parties like the Moderate Party of Rhode Island. Arguing that "fundamental rights are at stake," the ACLU, representing the Moderate Party, wants a court to rule on the alleged unfairness of the law before the funds are disbursed.
