Aaron Regunberg, a candidate for the state representative seat being vacated by former House speaker Goron Fox, has won the endorsement of Representative Edith Ajello and former rep Nick Tsiongas.
Ajello, who lost her post as chair of the House Judiciary Committee after Nicholas Mattiello won the fight to succeed Fox as speaker, is a liberal favorite on Providence's East Side. Tsiongas formerly represented the East Side's Mount Hope and Summit neighborhoods.
In a statement, Ajello said, “Aaron Regunberg will be a strong, effective voice for the issues we care about in our community. I support Aaron because I know he will fight alongside me in the House to strengthen our economy, stand up for women’s reproductive rights and work to protect our civil liberties. He’ll also work tirelessly to bring the voices of our community up to the State House, and I can’t wait to partner with him in representing the East Side of Providence.”
Regunberg has gotten off to a fast start in his campaign, raising $25,000 within a short amount of time after announcing his campaign. Lawyer Miriam Ross is also running for the District 4 House seat as a Democrat, and Heather Tow-Yick, head of the local chapter of Teach for America, has filed a notice of organization for a campaign. Maryellen Butke is also a potential candidate.
Tsiongas, a former past president of the RI Medical Society, says, “I know Aaron will be an excellent legislator based on his record of making real changes in the areas of education and tax fairness. I’m most impressed by his integrity and his strong ethics, and I can see he has the experience and skills we need in the General Assembly. That is why I am so excited to be supporting his candidacy.”
Regunberg is best known as an activist and co-founder of the Providence Student Union group.
