Another charged in cigarette tax evasion ring

PROVIDENCE, RI – Rhode Island State Police have arrested a fifth man in a cigarette tax evasion ring. Mohamed Jamaleddin, was picked up Thursday. He is the owner of the Savers Mart store on Elmwood Avenue in Providence. Jamaleddin is charged with importation of cigarettes with intent to evade tax and sale of untaxed cigarettes.

State police Captain James Demers says more arrests are possible.

"Since we made the arrest we've received a considerable amount of information. It takes time to look into," says Demers." We have some guys looking into the information we've received over the past few days."

Jamaleddin is the fourth convenience store owner to be charged with selling untaxed cigarettes. State police say the scheme has been costing the state close to $6 million a year.
