A swastika made of human feces was found in a dormitory bathroom at the Rhode Island School of Design over the weekend. School authorities are investigating the incident as an act of vandalism and a potential hate crime.
RISD Public Relations Director Jaime Marland said there is no place for that kind of “level of disrespect and vitriol” at the school.
“We are deeply committed to providing a safe and supportive campus environment for our students and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind,” added Marland.
Swastikas have been found in areas across the city and state occasionally over the past year, but according to U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha, his office has not found an increase in hate crimes.
“We’ve had some vandalism against a temple or a Jewish community center in some instances," said Nerohna. "I don’t think there’s been an uptick, but every time that happens it’s very concerning.”
Local and national Jewish Groups have reported an anecdotal increase in anti-Semitic acts in recent months.
