Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien announced the city is considering a gallery, theater or performing arts center as part of the proposed PawSox stadium. Incorporating space for Pawtucket’s art scene into the ballpark would draw more visitors to the city, Grebien said in a statement released Thursday.
“The ballpark will be a true destination serving as the centerpiece for all types of activities,” Grebien said. “Pawtucket’s art community is a hallmark of our culture. This is yet another opportunity that Pawtucket can maximize upon.”
Developers have expressed interest in the idea. Janet Marie Smith, a baseball development executive and advisor to the PawSox, and Morris Nathanson, designer of Pawtucket’s Riverfront Lofts, are working on ideas for incorportating spaces for the arts into the stadium.
Rhode Island’s Senate approved public financing for the proposed ballpark. The legislation is still being considered by the state's House of Representatives.
