Attorney sentenced to five years in prison

PROVIDENCE, RI – The last of five men arrested in a North Providence corruption scandal has been sentenced. Former town solicitor Robert Ciresi will serve five years and three months in prison for facilitating bribes for three former North Providence town councilors. Defense attorneys argued for home confinement for the 78-year-old attorney. Federal prosecutors wanted him to serve eight years in prison.

A jury convicted Ciresi of conspiracy, bribery and extortion. Prosecutors said he was the middleman, helping to deliver bribes extorted by the councilmen. He was ordered to surrender to federal prison authorities on August 31st.
