Avedesian will seek more funding for RIPTA

PROVIDENCE, RI – There's new leadership at the helm of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. The board has unanimously elected Warwick Mayor Scott Avedesian Monday as its chairman. He replaces Providence Planning and Development director Thomas Deller, who will remain on the board.

Avedesian said one of his top priorities is getting additional funds from the legislature to close a nearly $2 million deficit in the current fiscal year.

"We hope to have the $1.9 million down to $1 million so we're looking at a million dollars," said Avedesian.

Avedesian explained that he's not a regular RIPTA rider because the seven-mile trip from his Warwick home to Warwick City Hall would take nearly three hours.
