Ban The Box Legislation Becomes Law

Jul 17, 2013

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has signed the “ban the box” legislation into law.

The legislation gets rid of questions on a job application asking about criminal arrests, charges or convictions. Employers would still be able to run criminal background checks and ask about any criminal history in the interview, but not on the application. The bill’s sponsors say this will provide protection from discrimination and help ex-offenders move on with their lives. The new law takes effect, January 1st.  Meanwhile there will soon be what’s called a “certificate of recovery and re-entry” program at the state’s prison system.
