Legislation sponsored by Providence Rep Edith Ajello, would add two student positions to the newly formed Rhode Island Board of Education.
One seat would represent public high schools—the other seat, public colleges.
The two students would not be given a vote, but would be able to voice their opinions, providing insight to the board says Ajello.
“Being heard, I think, is important, and being there regularly as opposed to simply when a student wants to speak on a particular issue can make the students more aware of all the issues. And I think for the other members of the board it can be very helpful to have the student perspective.”
Ajello says the idea for legislation was suggested by two Brown University students.
