PROVIDENCE, R.I. – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says investing in infrastructure and reaching across political lines is how Rhode Island and the rest of the country will dig its way out of the recession.
Bloomberg made the comment during his endorsement Thursday of Independent gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee. Bloomberg says it takes leadership to reach across party lines and to raise taxes.
"At least the Senator has had the courage to stand up and say, 'Look, I'm not going to promise you a chicken in every pot. We're gonna have to pay our police officers, and our firefighters and our teachers money's gotta come from some place, this is a way to spread the burden.'"
Democratic challenger Frank Caprio has been attacking Chafee's plan to fill budget gaps by taxing groceries and prescription drugs, which are currently exempt.
