Central Falls grad Viola Davis gets Oscar nod

PROVIDENCE, RI – Central Falls very own Viola Davis has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. The Oscar nod is for her role as a maid who tells her story about raising white children in "The Help." Davis credits Central Falls High School for nurturing her love of acting. And she gives back to Rhode Island donating to the Central Falls library and lending support to the Mixed Magic Theatre company.

Mixed Magic's Ricardo Pitts-Wiley says Davis' rise shows how a community can nurture someone with ambition and talent.

"And I think central Falls was one of those rare places where there were people and elements that said wait a minute, we're not going to let the economics determine the opportunity here," says Pitts-Wiley

Davis was also nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Doubt.
