PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee held a retreat with his Cabinet in West Greenwich Monday to look back, and ahead. Chafee called the retreat a chance to share ideas on how to improve state government.
Health and human services secretary Steven Costantino says different state departments should raise their focus on creating jobs.
"We don't look at our agencies as economic development engines," he says. "I think if we start doing that and turn and twist the programs in a way that promote job growth we can do that." Costantino says the state hopes to boost economic development in part by leveraging federal dollars. Other administration officials declined to talk in detail about ideas they say require further vetting. The retreat comes before an expected special legislative session on pensions later this month.
