Chafee defends statehouse "holiday tree"

PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee is facing criticism for calling the 17-foot evergreen tree in the statehouse a "holiday tree." Republican Representative Doreen Costa claims the language goes against a resolution that declares the tree to be a "Christmas tree." Providence's Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin says he finds the move disheartening. Governor Chafee however points out that the term "holiday tree" is in keeping with Rhode Island's founding principle of religious freedom.
