Chafee directs state to aid displaced ASFT workers
By IAN DONNIS
PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The Chafee administration is moving to aid the local workers getting laid off Monday by the Middletown defense company accused in a kickback scheme.
Advanced Solutions for Tomorrow, ASFT, is shutting its doors and laying off about 100 to 150 workers in Rhode Island, Virginia, and Georgia. The Georgia-based company says it can no longer operate because its assets were frozen.
Michael Trainor, spokesman for Governor Lincoln Chafee, says Chafee's given this direction to the state Department of Labor and Training: "Prepare a comprehensive set of recommendations on services that can be provided to the displaced workers."
Trainor says Chafee also asked Economic Development director Keith Stokes for possible steps to protect Aquidneck Island's defense industry. He adds that the administration doesn't expect a negative ripple effect from the case involving ASFT.
Trainor says it's not yet known how many of the workers being cut by ASFT are in Rhode Island.
