PROVIDENCE,RI – Governor Chafee has made up his mind. He won't allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the Ocean State. The decision comes after a more than four month hold on the state's so called compassion centers.
In a statement released today, Chafee says "Rhode Island cannot proceed with the licensing and regulation of medical marijuana compassion centers under current law."
The Governor says residents with severe medical issues should have safe access to medical marijuana, but distributing the drug is still illegal under federal law. Chafee says the U.S. Justice Department has warned him that the Rhode Island's proposed compassion centers would be open to "vigorous" criminal and civil enforcement by the federal government.
Medical marijuana advocates plan to sue the governor to force him to license the dispensaries.
